Theatre Department Debuts 'Reckless'

Studio 115 at the UMW Theatre Department will begin their second play of the semester starting this Thursday, Oct. 22. “Reckless,” by Craig Lucas, will run from Thursday to Sunday, with a total of six shows in the department’s black box studio. Tickets to “Reckless” are free and distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis starting one hour before performances begin at the door of Studio 115, in the basement of duPont Hall.
According to the department press release, “Reckless” “tells the story of Rachel, whose husband Tom reveals to her that he has hired an assassin to kill her. Rachel embarks upon a bizarre, madcap journey, encountering a few useless psychiatrists, appearing on a hit TV game show and befriending Lloyd and Pooty, a couple harboring some deep, dark secrets of their own.”
Tara Lescault, a senior theatre major is directing “Reckless.” Lescault has taken directing classes at in the theatre department and been involved in other productions, but “Reckless” will be her directorial debut. “It’s a black comedy,” said Lescault. “There are some very very funny parts but also some parts that really make you think. It’s about the American Dream. A family, kids, a nice home…and how that all can go wrong.”
The play has a cast of ten actors, nine of which have worked together on other productions at UMW. Maggie Bausch, who plays the lead role, Rachel, described the show as a coming-of-age story revolving around her character. “Rachel lives in a fantasy world. She’s very young, married young, had kids young. She never really had a chance to grow up.”
“It’s definitely thought provoking,” said Lescault. The play examines how “the past is something your wake up from…but also something you wake up to.” As worded in the text, “Life has been reckless to these people.”
Studio 115 has a small capacity and will sell out quickly. Make sure to arrive early to purchase tickets.
