Around 12:25 p.m. Saturday, the mother of a UMW student was robbed while exiting Giant, the grocery store in Eagle Village, university officials said.  No weapon was involved in this crime.

The suspect, who appeared to be a black male between 30 and 40 years old, came up behind the woman, tackled her and stole her purse before fleeing the scene in a gold Cadillac sedan with Maryland license plate number 6EVJ45, according to a campus crime alert sent out to students this afternoon.

Witnesses said the suspect was last seen driving northbound on U.S. Route 1, according to the alert.

UMW officials said that the suspect has a short haircut and no facial hair.  He was wearing a black tank top, khaki shorts and a baseball cap.

The victim was visiting for Family Weekend, according to the alert.

The alert said the Fredericksburg Police Department issued a “be on the lookout” alert and all local law enforcement is searching for the suspect.
