UMW Swim Teams Crush Competition

The prominence of Mary Washington’s swimming program was apparent in victories against Frostburg State and Randolph-Macon College Saturday at the Goolrick Natatorium.
The men’s team won 160-87 in an early Capital Athletic Conference match-up. The men excelled as a team in the 200-medley relay and 400 free relay. They also excelled individually, winning a multitude of events.
In long distance, sophomore Andrew Garafolo won the 1000 and 100 freestyles, while freshman Carey Natoli won the 500 freestyle.
In middle distance, winning performances came from freshman Nate Moyar in the 200 breaststroke, junior Austin Clark in the 200 freestyle, and senior Ian McCormick in the 200 butterfly. Sophomore Nick Eckhoff also won the 200 backstroke and senior Stephan Clendenin was victorious in the 200 IM.
For sprints, junior Billy Norfolk won the 100 butterfly, junior Brian O’Donnell won the 50 freestyle, sophomore Peter Slattery won the 100 breaststroke, and junior Cesare Zannoni won the 100 backstroke.
The women beat Frostburg State 104-16 and Randolph-Macon College 76-46. Winning performances included freshman Jessica Singer in the 1000 freestyle, freshman Allison Martin in the 200 butterfly, junior Kristen Sotzing in the 200 backstroke, freshman Kristen Callahan in the 200 breaststroke and senior Sarah Crockett in the 500 freestyle.
“We focused a lot on cheering for one another and especially the girls team,” Clendenin said. “Our no.1 goal this season is to get a guys relay to the NCAA championships this year.”
Both the men’s and women’s teams have won the CAC Championship for the last 10 years, and they look to continue their dominance.
“Its really not about competing against other teams anymore,” first year head coach Abby Brethauer said “It’s about excelling against themselves and other teammates.”
The swim team has one more meet before Thanksgiving Break against York College tomorrow. They will make final adjustments as they prepare for their winter season and the hunt for another conference title.
