Do you write poetry? Are you interested in readings around campus? This week’s meeting of Thursday Poems showcased the work of The University of Mary Washington 302A Creative Writing students. The readings featured poems, raps and short stories with subjects ranging from oranges and Jesus, to softball games and the Titanic.
Thursday Poems are a tradition at UMW, taking place every Thursday at 5 p.m. where faculty, students and guest speakers gather to read their favorite poetry.
The final Thursday Poems of the 2012 spring semester included Gregory Chandler, who read a poem about losing his pencil, Amanda Grace, who presented a piece called “Doodling on the Back of my Hand in European History: 3rd Edition,” and Camille Turner, who read her poem titled, “I Wish We Were Still Newlyweds.”
The readers were enthusiastic about their writings, and their love for sharing their poems with the audience was evident.
“I love Thursday Poems because I get to see the talent we have at Mary Washington as far as writing goes, and I’m impressed,” said Tyshawnda Silver after reading her poem, “Jesus the Jigsaw.”
Similarly, senior Jessica Napier said, “I like hearing the work from the people I take the class with and workshop with. It was nice reading my work because I don’t normally read poetry, but I was expressing myself to new people in a new way.”
Although Thursday Poems normally features an assortment of faculty, guest, student and volunteer speakers, the last Thursday Poems meeting admired the work of UMW’s creative writing students. This privilege allowed students to share what they learned and how their work progressed throughout the semester.
One student reflected upon her favorite part of Thursday Poems.
“It was nice to see how everyone stepped up a notch from the first time I read their stuff,” said Rose Bristow.
Thursday Poems is a great opportunity for the UMW community to come together and support each other’s passions and talents while watching their progression.
