Women's hoops smashes Ferrum

The University of Mary Washington women’s basketball team took down No. 20 Ferrum College, 64-48, in a slow-paced, defensive showcase on Wednesday evening in the Anderson Center. Junior guard Sam Partonen led the team with 17 points while senior center Carol Dye energized the crowed with 14 rebounds, six blocked shots and an incredible screen that leveled Ferrum guard Jacole Hairston.

The first half was low scoring and ridden with questionable calls made by the referees. Eagles fans disagreed with the refs when they penalized Dye for pushing in the second half.

The team converted only 39.1 percent of its shots in the paint coupled with 42 percent from the field in the first half, improving to 56 percent and 100 percent, respectively.

While the first half could be described as forgettable, the second half was a display of determination by the Lady Eagles. The highlight of the second half was a screen made by Dye that resulted in Ferrum’s Hairston looking like she hit a brick wall. The Eagles stiffened on defense to allow only eight points in the second half, while racking up 20 rebounds, 10 of which were from Dye.

“Defense has always been my favorite part of basketball,” Dye said. “Tonight was a job exceptionally well done.”

The Eagles will travel to Frostburg State on Saturday, Jan. 26 for a 1:00 p.m. game.
