To the Editor:

How did you spend your leisure time this academic year? Did you find yourself watching too much TV, playing video games until you were bored or maybe stalking friends on Facebook?

Consider what you will do with your free time when you return in the fall.

How about spending an hour a week getting some fresh air, exercise, a healthy dose of fun and the adoration of a young person?

You can volunteer to be a “Big” this fall. A “Big” is a mentor, a role model and a friend. Nearly 20 University of Mary Washington students volunteered with the school-based program at Lafayette Upper Elementary School, and had a great time doing it.

If you will be a freshman, sophomore or junior in the fall, we may have the perfect volunteer position for you. You can play board games, help with homework, throw a football, play one-on-one basketball, do arts and crafts, talk, jump rope or run. Kids have energy and love having a college student hang out with them. Transportation is available from UMW as well.

If you are interested, please contact Rappahannock Big Brothers Big Sisters at 540-371-7444 or email cynthiaosband@rbbbs.org. We will provide more information, and if you decide to sign-up, the interview takes just an hour. See you in the fall!
