Faculty collects school supplies for local kids

The University of Mary Washington’s Advisory Council continued relationship building in the local community by heading a school supply drive for area elementary schools.

Priscilla Sullivan, the Staff Advisory Council Chair, put the project together back in August as an attempt to distribute help to those in need.

The drive collected 137 composition books, 32 backpacks, 38 glue bottles and 50 boxes of crayons for the schools in need.

Sullivan was proud of the success of the event, as well as the increasingly positive view of the university local residents hold.

“What a wonderful display from our UMW community,” said Sullivan. “Given the state of the economy and subsequent belt-tightening, it is so heart warming to see the generosity of our UMW family.”

A sign of the magnitude the effort made is seen by the question posed by one high school administrator: “ Did local stores donate items?” and they did not.

The large quantities of much needed supplies will not be divided up by the Staff Advisory Council. It will be split up amongst the schools to ensure that the schools with the most need are treated first.

This was the third such charitable event held by the UMW Staff Advisory Council.
