Winter Market warms

Despite the extremely cold night, many students still gathered around to visit the Winter Market hosted by the University of Mary Washington German Club Wednesday, Nov. 13.
The annual “Weihnachtsmarkt” on Ball Circle featured multiple vendors selling merchandise in order to raise money or make profits for student organizations. Many students seemed excited to attend the event due to the bake goods.
“Every year it surprises me. There were so many baked goods around it made me want to go to the gym. The German market was very interactive and made me connect with the multiple organizations selling products,” said sophomore Mimi Ampomah.
The German Club, along with several other clubs, sold a variety of baked goods. The majority of items sold were cookies, stolie, chocolate and gluhwein, a German hot beverage.
The National Society of Collegiate Scholars took more of a healthy stand and sold gluten-free bake products. They also added a creative twist this year by taking donations for decorating cookies. Students who donated money were able to decorate and customize their own delicious treat. The UMW’s Girls Soccer Club was very creative this year as well, and they sold raffle tickets for gift cards, as well as selling homemade cupcakes. Several other clubs strayed from the bakedgoods formula, such as Alpha Mu Sigma, who sold hair bows, coupon cards and spirit ties in order to raise money for their coed-Fraternity.
In addition to vendors, the winter market provided entertainment for students perusing the various booths. Student a cappella group BellAcappella performed during a portion of the market, and festive music played all evening.
Despite the chill, Winter Market remains a tradition at UMW, marking the beginning of the holiday season and warming students’ spirits.
