‘House of Cards’ dominates Netflix in season two

Luck had it that Netflix released the second season of “House of Cards” on a snow day.

The season opener had the qualities fans came to love in the first season. Sinister and intriguing, it gave many a new and irrational fear to the subway, but also set a dark stage for the Underwood duo.

After ending season one with the murder of Peter Russo, the audience knew Frank Underwood was ruthless. The smooth talking and charming, new vice president wanted the presidency more than anything.

After the death of the overzealous reporter Zoe Barnes in only the first episode, the audience became well prepared for the cruelty and genius that Frank always delivers.

Throughout the series, Frank and Claire Underwood never fail to closely resemble Shakespeare’s Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. Their callous, calculated and vicious misdeeds shake the nation.

They set the fall for a Marine general, several senators and congressmen, the White House chief of staff and even old lovers. The most influential downfall they scheme leads to the impeachment of the president of the United States.

Claire, with her interview on national television, did some of the smartest and most vulnerable moves, where she revealed that she was raped (which was factual) on national television, and that a pregnancy and abortion resulted from that assault (which was not entirely factual) brought her into the spotlight with her husband. They became household names and they were discussed in the public and media more so than the president.

This revelation of Claire’s brought Frank and her out of the shadow of the presidency, and their personal lives to the public. Many citizens grew to trust the Underwoods after this, creating a smoother transition to the White House by the end of the season.

While the Underwoods experienced setbacks and vulnerable moments in this season, they came together and were a force to be reckoned with.

With careful planning and pure luck, the Underwoods finally made it to the destination they had worked for decades to get to: the White House.

With the amount of enemies, both Frank and Claire have made in both the Senate and the House, the support they will have during their time may be limited. The power they gained has been through scheming, backstabbing and corrupt promises.

By the end of the second season it remains to be seen if the Underwood’s will get theirs in the end. Needless to say, “House of Cards” delivered a shocking and amazing season that left its audience wanting for more.

Its safe to say that season three will be an unbelievable story of the Underwood’s reign.
