Lax teams pick up big wins

The University of Mary Washington men’s lacrosse team earned a big victory on April 12 against conference foe Frostburg State, winning 10-8.
Frostburg State, now with an 11-4 record, could not defeat goaltender Zack DelGrosso in Saturday’s game, as they scored eight goals despite taking 47 shots in the game.
DelGrosso improved his own record this season to 11-2 and was also named Capital Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week for his performance in the team’s two wins in CAC play last week.
The 14th-ranked UMW men’s lacrosse (11-2) improved to 4-2 in the conference standings with the win, led by seniors Luke Dick and Chip Pittard who scored three goals apiece.
Senior attacker John Bohlinger added a goal and three assists in Saturday’s matchup.
UMW came out strong in the first quarter, outscoring their opponent 3-1, despite being outshot 13-10. A weaker performance by the men’s team in the second quarter led to a tie at halftime as Frostburg State scored three unanswered goals in the final five minutes of the half.
“We lost our edge toward the end of the half, but we regrouped and got the win,” said junior Chris Garcia.
Frostburg State opened the second half with a score, allowing them to take their only lead of the game at 6-5. UMW responded with two goals from Pittard and Bohlinger and ended the third quarter leading by one goal.
A very competitive fourth quarter featured back-and-forth scoring from both teams and was ultimately decided by a DelGrosso save in the last few minutes that resulted in a big change of possession which ended with a goal by Dick.
The goal put the Eagles ahead 9-8, and the team sealed their fate with an unassisted open-net goal by Dick with 25 seconds left.
With just a week until the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament on April 23, the men’s lacrosse team finds itself ranked third in CAC regular season standings. The team’s only losses came against the two schools ranked higher in the CAC, Salisbury University and York College (Pa.).
The UMW women’s lacrosse team extended their winning streak with a crushing 19-6 victory over Wesley University on April 16, following a 21-14 weekend victory versus Guilford University.
The team’s winning streak kept them within reach of second place in the Capital Athletic Conference with a 4-2 conference record, trailing York College (Pa.) by one game.
The Eagles (11-4) controlled the game from the very beginning, jumping to a 5-0 lead.
The team led 11-2 at halftime and did not look back from there, outscoring Wesley 8-4 in the second half. Their team’s unselfish play was very evident, as five players scored two goals, yet no player scored three or more.
Junior attacker Corinne Wiederkehr led the team with four assists, all in the first half, and added two goals.
Freshman midfielder Emily Mott contributed three assists, while senior attacker Jenna Petrucelli and sophomore attacker Ashlyn Dacey both added two goals and two assists.
The team outshot Wesley 28-14 for the game after outshooting Guilford 34-28 in the team’s matchup last weekend. Against Guilford, most of UMW’s goals came from four of its players.
Petrucelli led the team with six goals, while senior midfielder Katie Williams, junior midfielder Emily Atkinson and Wiederkehr scored four goals each.
The women’s lacrosse team’s regular season finale takes place April 19 at home against Marymount University (8-6).
