The holiday lineup: must see new movies of the season

‘Tis the season for reboots, remakes and sequels. If you’re wondering what movies are worth watching this winter break, this comprehensive list is here to help you navigate through this season’s latest cinematic offerings. Since a lot of the movies coming out these next few weeks are continuations of franchises or reboots, I have given each of these movies an approval rating, based on whether that franchise is still fresh and hyped up or whether its overdone. So in order from least anticipated and not that great to incredibly hyped and amazing, here are the picks for Holiday Movie Season 2017.

8. “Daddy’s Home” (Nov. 10)

Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg star in this Christmas movie as two dads trying to create a perfect holiday for their children. Chaos ensues when their own fathers show up and treat the entire family to a luxury vacation at a getaway resort.

Rating: There’s no need to spend money on this.

While we enjoy seasonal comedies, this franchise shouldn’t have even spawned a sequel. It doesn’t exactly stand out in the grand scheme of Christmas comedies that have come out in recent years, and its plot is overdone at this point.

7. “Pitch Perfect 3” (Dec. 22)

The Bellas reunite for one final show after going different directions after their win at the world championships. With their overseas USO tour, the Bellas take their final curtain call as they navigate life after college.

Rating: Nope, too overdone.

The phrase, “you should quit while you’re ahead,” applies to this movie and the franchise overall. The first Pitch Perfect was a memorable hit that resonated well with its audience. The second one was tolerable and still had catchy tunes. It’s a hard pass.

6. “Bad Mom’s Christmas” (Nov. 1)

Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell and Kathryn Hahn return as the titular Bad Moms who now have the daunting challenge of preparing the perfect holiday for their kids. The added stress of each of their visiting mothers only adds to the hilarity of their crazy situations.

Rating: It’s 50/50, some might like it and others won’t.

Of the two movies on this list about families coming together for Christmas, this one is the much better pick. Of course not everybody will find it enjoyable, and it isn’t for all audiences. But for those looking for a funny, mindless holiday romp, this one’s for you.

5. “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” (Dec. 20)

Part reboot and part homage, this movie sees the likes of Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black and Nick Jonas come together for a fresh take of the classic 1995 film. When four teenagers find themselves sucked into the Jumanji video game, they quickly learn to adapt to their new surroundings as they play and try to survive.

Rating: Another 50/50, could be worth a shot but some say you shouldn’t mess with a good thing, like the original.

This might be one of the most divisive films to come out this season. While some keep an open mind, others are wary of it and compare it to the original classic with the much beloved Robin Williams. While it isn’t a direct remake, it still retains some elements from the original. It might be worth a watch for those who are fans of the cast and don’t mind a fresh take on the nostalgic film.

4. “Murder on the Orient Express” (Nov. 10)

A remake of Agatha Christie’s famous novel and the 1974 film, this mystery thriller boasts one of the most star-studded casts of any movie coming out this season. Kenneth Branagh, Johnny Depp, Josh Gad, Michelle Pfeiffer, Penelope Cruz, Daisy Ridley and Dame Judi Dench are just some of the actors who grace the film with their presence. Expect a classic thrill ride, as Detective Hercule Poirot attempts to solve a murder case on a train.

Rating: Yes, this looks amazing.

This should catch your attention based on its remarkable cast alone. But the new direction and modernized sets are also worth noting. This is the film for those who love mysteries and enjoy good old-fashioned thrillers.

3. “Justice League” (Nov. 17)

DC’s biggest heroes unite on the big screen when faced with an imminent invasion from Steppenwolf and his army of Parademons. Batman and Wonder Woman recruit Flash, Aquaman and Cyborg in order to face the threat and form the Justice League.

Rating: Yes, this movie looks rad and a step in the right direction for the DC Extended Universe.

This is the movie for people who have been comic book fans, but it’s also a good pick for people who enjoy thrilling, action-packed movies. Justice League has got all the makings of a good movie: heart, humor, lovable characters and lots of great action and effects.

2. “Thor: Ragnarok” (Nov. 3)

The god of thunder is back in the next installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Chris Hemsworth shines as Thor, who finds himself trapped on the other side of the universe as he tries to survive and prevent the evil goddess, Hela, from destroying Asgard. Expect appearances and team-ups from beloved Marvel characters like the Hulk and Loki, and welcome in new characters like Valkyrie and the Grandmaster.

Rating: Yes, this movie and its entire franchise is awesome. You absolutely should watch it. Not only is it an entertaining movie on its own and one of the funniest superhero movies to ever come out, but it is a crucial film to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. For fans who are highly anticipating the return of the Avengers in next year’s Infinity War, this movie will tide you over until then and provide important information for the next installment in the MCU.

1. “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” (Dec. 15)

The next episode in the ongoing Star Wars saga sees the return of Rey, Kylo Ren, Finn, Poe Dameron and veterans Luke Skywalker and General Leia Organa. Rey will start to learn how to control and use her new abilities under the guidance of Luke, while Leia prepares the Resistance for war against the First Order.

Rating: Absolutely yes, run to the theater and watch it.

Perhaps the most anticipated film of the year, this is a must-see for anyone who loves these films. Be prepared to be shocked and emotional as Star Wars delivers new twists and gives answers to our most burning questions. Word to the wise, theaters will be packed for this. Make sure you plan ahead and be smart about when you go to see it, otherwise you’ll be faced with a huge mob of die-hard fans.
