Since 2003, World Suicide Prevention Day has been observed every Sept. 10 in order to provide worldwide commitment to suicide prevention. Suicide weighs heavily on many of those around us, including ourselves. Save.org states that suicide is the second leading cause of death in the world for those aged 15-24.

During this week of National Suicide Prevention, we support and acknowledge those whose lives are affected by suicide.

This includes people who have lost someone to suicide, people who have attempted suicide, people who are experiencing suicidal thoughts and people who are dealing with the aftermath of a suicide or suicide attempt.

It is our hope that we can cultivate a community that turns to self-care instead of self-harm.

You don’t have to suffer in silence or fight your battle alone. To anyone who has been affected by suicide, please know that there are resources available to you.

The Talley Center for Counseling Services may be reached at (540) 654-1053. The following resources are available 24/7: Crisis Text Line at 741741; the National Hopeline Network at 1-800-SUICIDE; the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK; the Northern VA Crisis Hotline at 1-703-527-4077; and the Transgender Suicide Hotline at 1-877-565-8860.
