The University of Mary Washington announced May 9 that it would appoint Ken Tyler as the new director of athletics.
According to a UMW press release, Tyler comes to UMW after serving as the athletic director at West Virginia Wesleyan College for four years. WVWC is a Division II school.
Before that, Tyler was head coach of the men’s basketball team for seven seasons at Shepherd University in Shepherdstown, W.Va.
Tyler’s retirement from WVWC is effective June 8, according to The Republic. A UMW press release stated that Tyler would begin working at the university later that month.
“I am grateful and honored to be named director of athletics at the University of Mary Washington,” Tyler said in the release. “Ed Hegmann and the terrific coaching staff have laid a very solid foundation, and I look forward to working with everyone to take the program to the next level. My family and I are excited to join the Eagle family, and I can’t wait to get started.”
Tyler is succeeding the outgoing Director of Athletics, Edward Hegmann, who held the job for 36 years.
Hegmann was unavailable for comment when the Bullet attempted to reach him.
Under Tyler’s direction, WVWC won 22 West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championships. Additionally, WVWC honored Tyler’s programs with the President’s Cup and Commissioner’s Cup for overall athletic excellence in the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in all four of his years at WVWC, according to the press release.
