While they did not perform any Christmas carols, the One Note Stand’s winter concert on Monday kicked off the season in a festive flurry of harmony.
After an introduction slideshow of the different members of the a cappella group in holiday garb, they appeared on the stage at Dodd covered in bows, to the cheers of the audience.
They opened with a mash-up of “As Long as You Love Me” by Justin Bieber and “Wide Awake,” by Katy Perry, with solos by junior Ian Heinz and freshman Katie Brajdic.
The group continued with a number of other popular songs, including “Let Go,” by Imogen Heap, with a solo by Bronwyn Stokes, “Everywhere I Go,” by Lissie, with a solo by junior Felysia Havens and “Cough Syrup,” by Young the Giants, with a solo by sophomore Kalynn Blakely.
One song that stood out was “The Sound of Silence,” by Simon and Garfunkel. Opening with an inspired solo by sophomore Jarae Rice, the group performed the piece as a harmony, rather than their usual song arrangement with one soloist, which really showcased the talents of the entire ensemble.
The audience had high opinions of the concert.
Senior Anna Smith said, “It was great to watch the amazing talents of my friends and see them doing what they love.”
The members of the group were also happy with the concert.
“The crowd was on the small side, but energetic,” Blakely said. “I think the show went really well.”
The concert was the last performance for senior Inga Maleombho, one of the group’s beat boxers.
“One Note was an awesome experience,” she said. “I’m really going to miss it.”
Their encore piece, “Some Nights,” closed the show on a strong note, and, just as the song states, “Some nights we win,” the One Note Stand performed a win of concert.
