Students donate clothing and goods to Goodwill

In a collaborative effort with the Rappahannock Goodwill Industries (RGI) the University of Mary Washington collected and donated 10,000 pounds of clothing and household goods to Goodwill.

The collection took place during the months of April and May 2013 with a “Drop-N-Go” drive that allows people to drop off their donations.

Many people around the community and school participated. Freshmen Kaitlin Garrison donated old clothes and items around her home.

“It was a good way to get rid of the stuff laying around the house we didn’t need, and a perfect excuse to clean,” said Garrison.

The drive at UMW collected more clothing than some large universities.

Sophomore Athena Tavuchis did not know about the drive last year but hopes for another event next year.

“It seems like a win-win situation, people can get rid of what they don’t want and others get it to help them,” said Tavuchis.

Garrison also did community service work at a Goodwill before and knows the organization well.

“The people who work there are great, and all they do to help those with disabilities is truly amazing,” said Garrison.

RGI works closely with People With Barriers, an organization that helps set up adults with physical and mental disabilities, with jobs and education so they can become more independent.
