Staff Editorial: Multicultural fair above and beyond this year

The Multicultural Fair this past Saturday, April 12, surpassed the already high standards it is has cultivated over the years. Specifically, the performances throughout the event were versatile and enchanting, as well as organized and interactive.

For instance, the Ras Lidj & Deep Band, which preformed reggae in front of Trinkle Hall, reached out to the crowd and included them in some of their freestyle songs. In addition, D.C. Murry gave an inspiring performance with the antiquated instrument of two spoons welded together, providing a beat by banging them against his body.

The dance ensembles, however, proved to be the most exciting performances of the events. The UMW Eagle Bhangra dance ensemble, which captures the style of Indian dance, was a highlight of the whole event.

The venders also gave the Multicultural Fair a wide variety of shopping. Lining Campus Walk, these venders were none in the same. The items sold ranged from jewelry to clothing and each had a style all their own ranging from American to African influence. These aspects heightened the experience of the students and the community and validated the fair’s claim to be multicultural.

The food venders, also, captured the theme of multiculturalism, with the line for Asian and South American influenced cuisine being the longest of them all. Then the almost fatal but appetizing choices of dessert, ranging from funnel cake to treats from an ice cream truck, were much appreciated.

Not only does the Multicultural Fair give students an immersion into multiple cultures, but it brings the student body as well as the community together.

Occurring only three weeks before finals, the fair gave students the opportunity to enjoy a beautiful day before the inevitable crunch of exam week.

It also gave the Fredericksburg community an opportunity to enjoy the campus that we students are able to enjoy every day. In fact, many locals came out this year and experienced the fair as well as we at “The Bullet” did.

We are excited to see what the next Multicultural Fair will bring and hope that it continues to surprise and enthrall the student body and community alike.
