Staff Ed: Resources are available for survivors during Sexual Assault Awareness Month
1 min readBy THE BLUE & GRAY PRESS EDITORIAL BOARD
April marks a month of nation-wide observance of the issue of sexual assault, and University of Mary Washington organizations are working hard to spread awareness through events and educational workshops across campus.
While these events may bring attention to an issue which affects members of the UMW community, the signs and announcements around campus may cause distress UMW students who are survivors of assault.
As these events occur across campus, it is important to bring attention to the resources available to students.
The UMW Talley Center offers individual counseling from 8a.m.-4:30p.m. on weekdays to students. For more information contact their office at (540) 654-1053 or visit Lee Hall room 106 or the Tyler House.
While the Talley Center is the most convenient for students, they do not offer services to students outside of their scheduled times. However, there are various resources in the Fredericksburg area that students can access if needed.
The Rappahannock Area Community Services Board (RACSB) provides community members with 24 hour crisis intervention. Contact (540) 373-6876 for more information.
In addition, the UMW Campus Police are available to students at any time. While they may not be able to provide counseling immediately, they are able to assist students in a number of ways. Contact them at (540) 654-1025.
As events to raise awareness about sexual assault continue, the Blue & Gray Press urges students to remember the resources available to them and take advantage of them if they are needed.
