Gym Class Heroes A Small Hit At Dodd

On Monday night, the Gym Class Heroes rocked a small but excited crowd at Dodd Auditorium.
The concert began at 8:15 p.m., fifteen minutes later than it was supposed to begin and ended at 9:30 p.m. The turnout was less than expected; less than half of the seats in Dodd Auditorium were full which was surprising because they are a well-known group throughout the nation and in the UK. Their popular single, “Cupid’s Chokehold,” reached No. 4 on the Billboard Top 100 chart. “Clothes Off!!” reached No. 5 on the UK Singles chart.
Harneet Othee, a fan from the crowd, said, “I think the reason why there was not a large turnout is because the concert was not publicized as much as other concerts and since it was on a Monday night, people are less likely to come out.”
Although she was disappointed with the turnout, Othee enjoyed the concert and said, “I was just excited to be in the front row!”
The alternative hip-hop group consists of lead singer Travis McCoy, drummer Matt McGinley, guitarist Disashi Lumumba-Kasongo and bassist Eric Roberts. They are currently on a college tour performing their recnt hits as well as other songs off of their older albums such as “Cookie Jar” and “The Queen and I.” The crowd went wild the whole night and the energy throughout the audience almost made the audience seem a lot larger than it was. Fans jumped and clapped to songs while McCoy encouraged the audience to dance. McCoy introduced the audience to each member of his band while singing one of the group’s songs and the intensity of the cheers from the crowd increased.
As an introduction to their most popular song, McCoy made a funny speech about the type of girl he was looking for. “I just want the kind of girl who likes to wear pajamas, eat cereal and watch Grey’s Anatomy.” The band launched into “Cupid’s Chokehold.”
When “Clothes Off!!” began to play, McCoy told the crowd to take an article of clothing off and throw it onstage. While a small amount of people actually took a piece of clothing off, most were afraid that they wouldn’t be able to get it back and refrained.
Several fans remained in Dodd Auditorium after the concert hoping to get autographs, pictures and hugs from the entire band. To their dismay, McCoy did not stick around to greet fans, but the rest of the band came out to the auditorium to talk and take pictures with fans. When asked if Lumumba-Kasongo and the rest of the band wanted to go to Capitol Ale House for their weekly “Dollar Burger Night,” he said, “The band and I already ate at Lone Star before the concert and I actually had two burgers there.”
Overall, the concert was a success and students were happy to attend a concert to relieve some stress before finals. Giant Productions tries to have at least one large concert each semester at Mary Washington and they accomplished this on Monday.
