Interim Provost Begins Duties

Ian Newbould started as interim provost on Monday, April 16 while the university continues to search for a permanent provost.

Newbould is a member of the Registry, which is the only firm in the country with a list of retired presidents, according to Newbould.

Newbould had been retired for nine months.

The Registry is the only group that specializes in pointing interims, and when the previous provost resigned, President Rick Hurley got in touch with the company.

Newbould began to look into the job after the Registry contacted him.

“The more I looked into it the more I became interested—UMW has a great reputation, it is a very good school,” said Newbould.

The relationship with the university’s president was also pertinent in the decision for Newbould.

Newbould chose to work at small universities before coming to UMW. Previously, he was president of universities in Canada, the UK and North Carolina.

“I believe in small universities because I think they are the best for students,” said Newbould.

According to Newbould, it is the people at the university that make the job worth it.

“As far as I am concerned, what makes the university is the people you work with and the students,” said Newbould.

Since beginning at UMW, Newbould has been busy meeting with people, and has enjoyed the campus and people within the university.

“It is a friendly and gorgeous campus,” said Newbould.

Newbould finishes his term as interim provost at the end of June 2013.

So far, he has only good things to say about UMW.

“It has been a really positive experience so far,” said Newbould.
