Staff Ed: the staff of the Blue & Gray Press stands with survivors of sexual assault
2 min readBy THE BLUE & GRAY PRESS STAFF
Over the past several weeks the issue of sexual assault has been coursing through American media outlets, with numerous well-known figures in Hollywood and politics being accused of sexual misconduct.
The figures accused are not merely movie stars and politicians, but are individuals in positions of authority and influence. One person recently accused of sexual misconduct is former Alabama state judge and current senate candidate, Roy Moore.
On November 9, 2017 The Washington Post released an account of Leigh Corfman, a woman who claims that Moore sexually assaulted her when she was 14, and he was 32.
Since her accusation, four other women have come forward accusing Moore of sexually assaulting them when they were teenagers. Moore has denied any sexual misconduct with his accusers.
While some members of the public are skeptical about the timing of these accusations, it is important to not discredit these allegations simply because an election is in progress. Sexual assault is a traumatic and sensitive subject, and these charges should be treated with care and fairness. It is a difficult decision for victims to stand up to their abusers, especially when they hold positions of power.
With the recent flurry of allegations, the Blue & Gray Staff wishes to express our unity with victims of sexual assault. With many members of the UMW community being survivors of sexual assault and abuse, we are committed to supporting the people affected.
We stand with survivors of sexual assault, and condemn the actions of sexual predators—regardless of their position in society or government.
