An American Family: meet the Millers

Laughter filled Monroe 116 this weekend when Cheap Seats played “We’re the Millers.” Jennifer Aniston, Jason Sudeikis, Emma Roberts and Will Poulter pulled together great chemistry in this not-so-family friendly comedy.

The plot centers around Sudeikis’s character, a 30-year-old drug dealer. Clark’s neighbor, played by Poulter, is about to be beaten up when he steps in to defend him. During the fight, Clark’s entire stash of drug money is stolen, putting him in a tight bind. As a solution to his problem, he hires a makeshift family to help him cross the border and smuggle in his drugs.

The movie had scandalous, heartfelt and action packed moments. Throughout the movie, Aniston works a stripper pole multiple times, which adds humor with a side of awkwardness, as her character is hardly believable. Aniston is too prim a woman to play the role of a stripper. Even with Aniston’s lackluster character, the cast displayed great synergy.

During the plot, they encounter quirky campers who turn out to be members of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). This and other unexpected twists put a hilarious spin on the movie, keeping the cast constantly on their toes. They must lie to get out of tricky situations and sexual encounters, leaving the audience laughing hysterically as the ragtag team of characters form their own dysfunctional family unit.

This movie is easily one of the best comedies of 2013. Despite the predictable storyline, “We’re the Millers” is a perfect blend of crude and quirky humor. While this is not a film you would watch with your family at home, it was a perfect way to spend a Saturday night on campus.
