Winter Soldier kicks of spring blockbusters

The groundbreaking “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” may just be one of Marvel’s most popular films thus far. As Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers tries to adjust to the modern world after being defrosted before “The Avengers,” the audience now finds Rogers working for S.H.I.E.L.D., an espionage and law enforcement agency.

Rogers is also partnered with Scarlett Johansson’s Natasha Romanoff, a.k.a. the Black Widow, and the two work diligently throughout the film to uncover a mystery that not only compromises S.H.I.E.L.D. but also shakes up the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe.

As the film progresses, Rogers’ past catches up to him, and he is left having to deal with the Winter Soldier, Rogers’ friend who died in the previous Captain America movie.

Just like the impressive performances in previous Marvel films, the acting in this movie was no exception. The camaraderie and tension between Evans and Johansson remained clear and genuine throughout the entire film. The actors do a wonderful job of portraying a growing relationship; as the movie progresses, so does the trust between the two characters.

Rogers also spends the movie connecting with Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson. Mackie’s lines are truly memorable, which brings a certain aspect to the film that would have been lost without them. Other actors such as Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury and Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill, did a wonderful job as well, and portrayed their characters seamlessly.

If audience members ever doubted Hill in “The Avengers,” it is very likely that they will have warmed up to her considerably in this second film.

Robert Redford, however, played the surprise role of this movie as he delivers a calm and collected performance in the film as Alexander Pierce. He holds a higher position of power in S.H.I.E.L.D. Although he may have been slightly underused, Redford’s role was a definite highlight of the film.

Sebastian Stan as the Winter Soldier was menacing and truly heartbreaking at the same time. While he did not have many lines, Stan easily conveyed his messages through soul-piercing facial expressions.

Emily VanCamp’s character, however, could arguably be viewed as the disappointment in this film. While VanCamp plays her part exceedingly well, her roles as Agent 13 was unfortunately underused. Many fans of the comic series may have left the theaters slightly disappointed, as Agent 13 plays a large part in Rogers’ life in the comics.

All things considered, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” is a remarkable film that is definitely worth seeing on the big screen. It is an enjoyable ride that has not only changed the Marvel Cinematic Universe but plays a major part leading up to the coming film, “Avengers: Age of Ultron.”
