Goody brings good vibes in Underground Programing Council’s spring showcase

Small-time bands Goody and Merchants of Seven preformed on Friday, April 4 as students stopped by to hear their musical talent at Underground Programming Council’s UPC annual spring showcase.

The Underground was packed more than the usual Friday night audience.

The University of Mary Washington’s own Goody headlined the show. Tanner Carlton, E.J. Willis and Mason Carlton, all students at UMW, make up Goody and have been together for about a year.

This past December they released a new album featuring their creative sounds that are “a blend of EDM (electronic dance music), hip-hop and alternative styles,” said Willis.

This talented trio said their favorite thing about preforming live is seeing the crowd’s reaction to their music.

“We play off of the crowd. Their energy matches our energy,” said Carlton.

Based on the reaction of the crowd this is sure to not be the last time we hear from the band.

Merchants of Seven, though not a UMW student-based group, kept the crowd lively at the Underground with their energy. The talented group traveled to UMW from Blacksburg, Va.

“I’ve known Jackson Stitzer [bass guitarist of Merchants of Seven] since elementary school. Their music is a lot more intellectually ground than others… there is more than just simple melodies, there is textual diversity in the music,” said Zaïre Sprowal, a sophomore physics major.

The crowd loved their music and danced around as the band played.

“I really liked the sound of Merchants of Seven,” said Giana Imeriale, a junior business major. “This is a sound I have never heard play in the Underground before.

This show was the last show the Merchants of Seven would play together before guitarist Ian Patrick moves to Colorado.

The spring showcase was a huge success, bringing students together at the Underground and showcasing great new music on campus.
